Tragedy struck in Lagos on Saturday when Otunba Kunle Akinyele, a prominent hotelier, collapsed and died during a thanksgiving service held in celebration of his wife’s 60th birthday.
The incident occurred at Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Iyanu, Odemuyiwa District Headquarters in Egbeda, where the family had gathered for the service. According to a Facebook post by digital creator Ayoade Ojeniyi, Akinyele showed signs of distress and appeared to be asking for assistance—possibly requesting water or his inhaler—before collapsing. A video shared alongside the post captured the moment he struggled visibly before slumping.
The thanksgiving service was organized in honor of Deaconess Catherine Adejoke Akinyele, his wife, and was to be followed by a reception at Noble Castle Events Centre in Igando. Event vendors reported arriving at the venue as early as 10 a.m. for the celebration scheduled to commence at 2 p.m.
Guests, along with the celebrant and her family, were attending the church service when the unfortunate incident unfolded. Eyewitnesses said Akinyele collapsed during his testimony, and despite efforts to revive him, he could not be saved.
One of the vendors, who had prepared various food items, decorations, drinks, and entertainment for the reception, expressed shock. “The live band was already set up with about 25 speakers. The MC even spoke with him around 1:23 p.m.,” the vendor wrote, noting that the devastating news emerged less than an hour later. The celebration was immediately called off, and guests left the venue in sorrow and disbelief.
“I can’t even bring myself to ask for my payment anymore,” the vendor added.
At the time of this report, the exact cause of death had not been officially determined.
It was also confirmed that Akinyele owned Ologbo Nla Hotel located in Isheri, Idimu, Lagos State.
The video of the incident drew emotional reactions across social media, with many users pointing to stress and the importance of men’s health.
One commenter, Taylor Sam, remarked, “So sad! Looks like the man was under a lot of stress. Men should ease up; life is not a marathon.” Murtala Olalere Aderinto wrote, “That was his final act of love for his wife and family. Death comes unexpectedly.” Cicero Sasore-Whyte added, “It comes like a thief in the night, and snatches life away before we know it.”
Another user, Sayo Akintola, reflected, “So sad! He breathed his last while praising his Maker. May his soul rest in peace.”
Many used the moment to emphasize the importance of health awareness, especially among men. “This is becoming all too common. Men, please look after your health,” Atteh Isaac Taiwo warned.
Other responses included brief prayers and expressions of grief. “Life is fleeting,” Goldfish Rahmatulai noted. “May our joyful moments not turn into sorrow,” wrote IamAdeosun Tajudeen. “Lord, have mercy,” added Ayodeji Haastrup.
Though the cause of death remains undetermined, the incident has prompted widespread reflection on the unpredictability of life and the importance of prioritizing health.
