A fatal road accident in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State has claimed six lives and left five others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The acting Sector Commander of the FRSC in Kogi, Mr. Samuel Ogundayo, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Okene.
Describing the crash as “tragic and unfortunate,” Ogundayo said the accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Monday in the Okenkwe area. It involved seven vehicles.
The accident was triggered when a truck lost its brakes while trying to ascend the Okengwe hill. The vehicle rolled backward, colliding with two tricycles, three cars, and finally crashing into another truck.
Ogundayo said, “The accident resulted in the deaths of six individuals, while five others sustained injuries.”
FRSC officers responded quickly, transporting the injured to the Referral Hospital in Okene for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue at Onene General Hospital.
Efforts by the FRSC, with support from other security agencies, helped to clear the traffic congestion caused by the crash and restore normal flow along the road.
The commander urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when driving behind heavy-duty vehicles on hilly terrain. He also advised strict adherence to road safety rules to help prevent further loss of lives on the roads.
