Anthony Joshua Discharged from Hospital After Fatal Crash

Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been released from the hospital and declared fit to continue his recovery at home.
A joint statement from Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed that Joshua was discharged on Wednesday. The statement noted that the boxer is emotionally affected by the loss of two close friends in the accident.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states extend heartfelt condolences to the families of Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically died in the crash involving Anthony Joshua on December 29, 2025,” the statement read. “We pray for the repose of their souls and for strength for their loved ones during this difficult time.”
Joshua and his mother visited the funeral home in Lagos to pay their respects before the bodies were prepared for repatriation. Both governors, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, expressed appreciation for the public’s concern and President Bola Tinubu’s support. The statement also acknowledged the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for attending to Joshua and other victims.
The accident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun, Ogun State, when the SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck. Two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed at the scene.
Ogun State FRSC spokesperson Afolabi Oyewole explained that the crash resulted from overspeeding and wrongful overtaking. The SUV’s driver, attempting to overtake at high speed, collided with a truck parked on the road shoulder. The impact occurred on the vehicle’s right side, which prevented further injuries to the other occupants.
Both Joshua and the driver survived and were immediately taken to a hospital by DSS operatives assigned to the boxer. Joshua is now reported to be in stable condition.
