A coalition of civil society organisations, labour groups, youth movements, community associations and faith-based organisations has announced plans for a nationwide protest on June 12 to draw attention to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges and deepening economic difficulties.
The coalition, led by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and several prominent activists, said the demonstration is intended to demand stronger government action against insecurity and policies that have increased hardship for millions of citizens.
According to the organisers, many Nigerians have little reason to celebrate Democracy Day as kidnappings, bandit attacks, terrorism and violent crimes continue to affect communities across the country. They expressed concern over the growing number of people living in fear, with many families still grieving losses or awaiting the release of loved ones held captive by criminal groups.
The coalition specifically called for the immediate release of individuals currently being held by kidnappers in states including Oyo, Borno, Ekiti and Kwara, stressing that the protection of lives and property should remain the government’s highest priority.
Beyond security concerns, the group criticised recent economic policies, arguing that rising fuel costs, currency depreciation, increasing electricity tariffs and the high cost of living have placed severe pressure on households and businesses.
The activists noted that soaring food prices, expensive transportation and declining purchasing power have worsened living conditions, while many workers continue to struggle with incomes that fail to keep pace with inflation.
They urged Nigerians to participate peacefully in the June 12 protest, describing it as a collective effort to demand improved security, better governance and economic policies that prioritise the welfare of citizens.
The coalition maintained that sustained public engagement is necessary to encourage meaningful action from authorities and address the challenges affecting millions of Nigerians nationwide.
