Police operatives have arrested an Accord Party lawmaker, Abiola Ibrahim Inaolaji, alongside about 146 people in Ikire, Osun State, over allegations that he was harbouring suspected mercenaries ahead of the governorship election.
Drivetvnews gathered that Ibrahim represents the Irewole/Isokan State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly.
The arrest followed the emergence of a viral video showing police officers confronting the lawmaker and a large group of people gathered at his private residence on Saturday, the day of the election.
The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the arrest in a telephone interview, saying the lawmaker was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation–Intelligence Response Team (FBI-IRT).
According to Ojelabi, Ibrahim was arrested in the early hours of Saturday for allegedly harbouring suspected mercenaries.
In the video from the scene, police officers questioned the lawmaker about the presence of the large group at the residence.
Ibrahim, however, insisted that the people were registered voters who had gathered to participate in the election.
He denied hiring or offering incentives to them, saying their decision to vote was entirely their choice.
The lawmaker also identified himself as a member of the Accord Party.
The development comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding the Osun governorship election, with authorities deploying security personnel across the state to prevent violence and electoral offences.
