Tinubu Updates on Anthony Joshua’s Condition Following Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Accident

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that Nigerian-British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua is receiving top medical care in Nigeria after a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he personally spoke with Joshua and his mother over the phone.
“I called AJ to express my condolences for the loss of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for his recovery. He assured me that he is receiving the best medical attention at the hospital,” the President said.
He also added that he spoke with Joshua’s mother, who was grateful for the call. “I prayed for her, and she appreciated the gesture. I also contacted Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with them. The governor assured me that he would ensure AJ receives the highest level of care,” the statement added.
Earlier, President Tinubu—currently abroad—expressed deep sympathy for Joshua via social media, acknowledging the emotional impact of the incident on him and his family. “As a sportsman, AJ has shown courage, discipline, and love for our country, qualities that make him a source of national pride. During this difficult time, we must support one another,” the President wrote.
He concluded by praying for strength and a speedy recovery for Joshua, while also remembering the deceased.
According to reports, the accident claimed two lives. The Federal Road Safety Corps attributed the crash to overspeeding.
