The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a farmer by suspected gunmen along Agunla Farm Road in Ayede-Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the incident was reported around 9:30 p.m. on Monday by a concerned resident.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim, identified as Ben Daniels, was riding a motorcycle with another man, James Unekwu, on their way to a farm settlement when they were attacked by armed assailants. Unekwu reportedly managed to escape, while Daniels was killed. His body was later found by the roadside.
Police officers responded swiftly to the report, evacuated the corpse, and deposited it at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Jimoh stated that Unekwu is currently under police protective custody as investigations continue, especially amid suspicions of possible conspiracy.
The police urged residents to remain calm and avoid blocking highways or engaging in actions that could disrupt public order, stressing that such measures violate the rights of other road users.
He assured the public that the grievances of concerned individuals are being addressed and that due process will be followed to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. The Commissioner of Police also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling crime across the state and encouraged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.
Meanwhile, youths in Ayede-Ogbese reportedly barricaded the Akure/Owo highway on Tuesday morning in protest against recurring killings in the community, causing a temporary halt to vehicular movement.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
