The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has condemned the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, calling on Bola Tinubu to impose strict sanctions on the country.

The monarch described the situation as deeply troubling, stating that attacks on Nigerians and other Africans should be seen as an assault on the entire continent.

His remarks follow reports of continued violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, including Nigerians, with incidents involving killings, looting, and destruction of businesses. At least two Nigerians have reportedly lost their lives in the attacks.

In a statement released through his media aide, Oba Akanbi said the developments had brought embarrassment to Africa on the global stage. He urged the Nigerian government to take decisive action, including recalling its ambassador and summoning South Africa’s envoy for explanations.

He also called on Africans across different countries to organise peaceful protests at South African embassies to express their opposition to the attacks.

According to the monarch, African nations must unite to address the crisis and prevent further violence. He suggested that an emergency meeting involving African leaders should be convened to demand accountability from South Africa’s leadership and find lasting solutions.

Oba Akanbi further stressed that Africans should be free to live and work in any part of the continent without fear, warning that continued hostility among African nations could undermine unity and development.

He added that Nigeria, often regarded as a leading nation in Africa, should take a firm stand in addressing the situation and protecting its citizens abroad.
