The Chief Imam of Ilaro, Ogun State, Tajudeen Adewunmi, has explained why he returned ₦25 million entrusted to him by late veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, before his death.
Adewunmi said the actor gave him the money to facilitate the rebuilding of his late grandfather’s house and not for a mosque project, as was later alleged.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Yoruba shared on Instagram on Monday, the imam said he had a close relationship with Ogogo because they lived in the same neighbourhood.
According to him, Ogogo transferred the money to him while preparing for possible medical treatment abroad and asked him to keep it until he could complete the family building project.
Adewunmi said he documented the transaction and informed members of Ogogo’s family about the funds to ensure transparency.
He explained that after Ogogo’s death, a rumour emerged that the ₦25 million was intended for a mosque project. This prompted him to meet with members of the actor’s family and clarify the purpose of the money.
The imam said he offered to return the funds and, after discussions with Ogogo’s family, it was agreed that the money should be transferred to the actor’s elder brother, Rilwan.
He added that Ogogo’s two wives and children agreed with the arrangement, allowing the family to decide how the money would subsequently be used.
Adewunmi maintained that the funds were specifically intended for the rebuilding of Ogogo’s grandfather’s house and not for the mosque project.
Taiwo Hassan died in August 2026 at the age of 66. The veteran Yoruba actor’s death attracted widespread tributes from colleagues, friends and admirers across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
