The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is set to work with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate alleged mismanagement and diversion of funds allocated to US-backed health programmes in Nigeria.
Drivetvnews gathered that the investigation will cover organisations and groups that received funding through programmes supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), particularly initiatives focused on HIV and tuberculosis.
The FBI made the request during a meeting with EFCC officials in Lagos as both agencies seek to strengthen cooperation on financial crimes involving international funding.
According to EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the request was presented by the FBI’s Assistant Law Enforcement Attaché, Macus Maccain, during his visit to the commission’s Acting Zonal Director in Lagos.
Maccain said the partnership would support investigations into possible financial irregularities involving organisations that implemented US-funded programmes in Nigeria.
He explained that particular attention would be given to funds that remained with implementing organisations after the termination of some USAID-supported programmes.
The FBI official said the agencies would work together to establish how the funds were managed and determine whether any financial misconduct occurred following the termination of the programmes.
