Public servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have declared a three-day warning strike over worsening economic hardship, rising living costs and demands for improved wages.

The industrial action is scheduled to begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, and end on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The council directed its national and state leadership to mobilise workers across the country ahead of the planned strike.

The directive was contained in a circular dated October 1 and signed by the National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga.

According to the council, the decision followed the Federal Government’s alleged failure to respond to demands contained in a letter submitted to President Bola Tinubu on September 21.

The JNPSNC called on public servants in federal, state and local government establishments to participate in the warning strike, citing the impact of the current economic situation on workers, their dependants and vulnerable Nigerians.

The council said the economic and mental pressures facing workers had become increasingly difficult to cope with and directed its leaders to begin immediate mobilisation for the action.

Among the demands previously presented to the Federal Government are a reduction in petrol pump prices, an immediate wage award for workers and the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.

The council had reportedly called for petrol to be reduced to ₦500 per litre, alongside the approval of a wage award and the establishment of a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage.

The demands come amid concerns over rising prices of food, transportation and other essential goods, which have continued to affect workers’ purchasing power.

The JNPSNC urged its national and state leaders to ensure that information about the warning strike reached workers across the country.

The council maintained that, as of the date of its circular, the industrial action would proceed from October 2 to October 4, with public servants across the three tiers of government expected to participate.
