The Kano State Police Command has detained nine suspects following a violent mob attack on the Garko Police Division, which erupted after officers arrested three men linked to a culpable homicide case.

Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Kiyawa explained in a statement on Saturday that the incident occurred on September 5, 2025. The suspects had been transferred from the Wudil Area Command to Garko Division for interrogation when a crowd armed with sticks and stones stormed the station.

The mob, angered by the death of the victim in the case, attempted to assault the suspects and caused widespread destruction. They burned a divisional patrol vehicle, vandalised three vehicles belonging to Hisbah and Garko Local Government, and smashed windows at the police building.

Three officers were injured during the chaos and were taken to Wudil Hospital, where they are responding to treatment. One attacker was killed when a burning tyre exploded and struck him, while three others sustained injuries.

Kano Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, quickly dispatched reinforcements and collaborated with community leaders to restore calm. He confirmed the arrest of nine suspects and said others involved were being pursued.

Bakori urged the public to avoid jungle justice, warning that such actions endanger peace and undermine the rule of law. He stressed that grievances should be reported through proper channels rather than resolved through violence.

He assured residents of the police command’s readiness to protect lives, safeguard property, and uphold peace across the state.

This incident comes just months after the commissioner launched a crackdown on Yan-Daba gangs in Kano, ordering raids on hideouts and pledging zero tolerance for violent groups. He emphasised that the police will remain proactive to ensure residents can “sleep with their two eyes closed.”
