The Delta State Police Command conducted a public display of individuals arrested for various offenses, which includes the tragic case of Sofia Nkwo, a 24-year-old woman accused of the murder of her one-year-old son.

In addition to Nkwo, the parade featured individuals involved in counterfeit alcohol production, murder, kidnapping, and car theft, among other crimes.

Addressing the press at the police headquarters in Asaba, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi, expressed condemnation for Nkwo’s alleged actions, labeling them as deplorable.

He recounted the incident, stating that on April 28, 2024, authorities received a report of infanticide in Oleh Division. Nkwo, hailing from Isoko South LGA, purportedly abandoned her child in a well in Araya community, Isoko South LGA. The child was discovered by other children playing nearby. Nkwo was swiftly apprehended, and during interrogation, she allegedly admitted to disposing of her child on April 26, 2024.

Furthermore, Olufemi detailed another case involving the production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages in Bomadi. Acting on intelligence, the police apprehended Chiemenam Adigwe, 45, who was found in possession of numerous bottles of fake alcoholic drinks. Adigwe reportedly concocted the beverages by mixing ethanol with water and flavoring, packaging them in bottles resembling popular brands such as Gordons, Chelsea, and McDowell’s.

Regarding recent incidents of kidnapping and violence in Ika North-East and Ika South, particularly targeting farmers, Olufemi assured that the command had deployed personnel to address the situation. Cooperation with the Edo State Command was also highlighted due to the shared border between Delta and Edo states.

Nkwo admitted to the crime, citing an inability to care for her child after the child’s father allegedly rejected them. She confessed, “I killed him because I can’t cater for him again since the father has long rejected him.”
